The Education Studies (EDST) Department is pleased to announce the following colloquium presentation by a candidate for the open rank, tenure-related position in Science Education in the Education Studies department of the College of Education.
Title: PARTICIPATORY ACTION RESEARCH WITH VETERAN TEACHERS
ON ISSUES OF FOOD SECURITY, FOOD IDENTITY, AND GARDEN-BASED STEM LEARNING
WITHIN A LOW-INCOME URBAN SCHOOL DISTRICT
Ms. Sarah Stapleton, Doctoral Candidate, Michigan State University

In this talk, Sarah will describe her dissertation research which employs participatory methodologies to work with four veteran urban teachers. Together, they are investigating ways in which food can or does intersect with schools in a low-income urban district. Sarah will outline the process through which they have collaborated, describe the district and teachers' contexts, and describe the teachers' individual action research projects. She will also describe the strengths as well as challenges of this type of collaboration with teachers for education research.
Sarah R. Stapleton is a doctoral candidate in Curriculum, Instruction, & Teacher Education at Michigan State University. She earned a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Sweet Briar College, and a master's degree in International Education Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Sarah spent six years teaching environmental, physical, & biological sciences at the middle and high school levels in public schools in California and in the Gambia, West Africa, as a Peace Corps volunteer. In her research, she uses critical and participatory perspectives to explore sustainability, equity, and justice within science and environmental education.
