The Education Studies (EDST) Department is pleased to announce the following colloquium presentation by a candidate for the open rank, tenure-related position in Science Education in the Education Studies department of the College of Education.

Title: INTEGRATING CLIMATE SCIENCE AND EVIDENCE-BASED ARGUMENTATION
TO PREPARE FUTURE ELEMENTARY TEACHERS

Dr. Julie Lambert, Professor of Science and Environmental Education,
Florida Atlantic University

WHEN: Monday, January 12, 2015
PRESENTATION: 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
WHERE: HEDCO 230T Education Conference Room

Despite the scientific consensus about climate change and the potential risk, the issue has unfortunately been highly politicized and misrepresented in the media. Furthermore, most adults have not had formal education on the fundamental physical, earth, and life science concepts needed to understand such as complex issue. In response, Dr. Lambert has been integrating climate science into elementary science methods courses to prepare future teachers to not only teach science, but to also become more critical analysts of information about the issue. Climate science provides a coherent theme to teach future teachers concepts that span several fields of science. Also, due to the rapidly evolving research in the field and the representation in the media, climate science is a relevant vehicle for teaching students about the nature and practices of science, as described in the Next Generation Science Standards. Dr. Lambert will discuss her approach and research on the cognitive, affective, and instructional aspects of teaching climate change to future teachers. She will also discuss the successes and challenges of using evidence-based scientific argumentation to prepare future teachers and the potential implications of climate change for teacher education and K-12 curriculum.

Julie Lambert's interest in the weather, climate, and oceans began in a middle school earth science course and ultimately led her to a career in teaching. After teaching earth and marine science several years in Virginia, she completed a M.S. in biological oceanography, Ph.D. in science education, and a post-doc at the University of Miami. Her research has focused on the teaching and learning of marine, earth, and climate science at various levels throughout K-16 education. As a co-Principal Investigator on the NSF-funded Florida Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence, Dr. Lambert co-authored the high school textbook, Life on an Ocean Planet, which is used in several countries throughout the world. She continued to follow her interest in the climate change issue throughout her career and by 2006, the year An Inconvenient Truth was released, she was integrating climate change as a coherent theme to teach core physical, life, and earth science concepts to future elementary teachers. She is Principal Investigator on Climate Science Investigations (http://www.ces.fau.edu/nasa/), a curriculum-development project funded by the NASA Innovations in Climate Education program. More broadly, Dr. Lambert is interested in environmental and social justice issues related to climate change. She is currently seeking National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Education funding to study evidence-based scientific argumentation as an approach to advance high school students' climate and energy literacy.
