Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,
I had the distinct pleasure of representing your work to our Board today. I want you to know that they were fully attentive, knowledgeable about your many past achievements, and willing to assist us as we strive toward the highest levels of achievement.
I used the slides attached for my 20 minute presentation, which was followed by a lively question and answer period. I am grateful to our department heads, development and communications offices, and deans for their input into this work. The presentation was well received as indicated by a request to receive a copy before the presentation was completed for use as an overview tool with outside stakeholders.
I decided to highlight our work in inclusion, equity, and prevention prior to using these slides. I began by describing Joanna Goode's work on her, and her collaborator's, Exploring Computer Science curriculum which is used increasingly by Los Angeles USD and other school districts serving youth that are underrepresented in the computing field. I also noted that her work was featured (and she was in attendance with 40 teachers that use her curriculum) at the White House summit on computer science education and coding held this past Monday. I then cited Jane Squire's attendance at the White House summit on early learning held on Wednesday. My last anecdote about our high performing faculty described Charles Martinez' and colleague"s work on building youth health and well-being in Central American countries, and the potential of work like this to serve as one antidote to the immigration issues currently in the headlines.
The second slide seemed to be of high interest as suggested by a question about resources that might be needed to move us to a top 3 ranking. The content of Slide 5, and the associated first bullet point on Slide 6, stimulated the most comments and discussion. The idea of better organizing our clinical outreach and services, and expanding them, generated a specific question about what we might need to make a comprehensive educational service center (my preliminary terminology) a reality. This idea was also cited by Board members as evidence of your inventiveness as a faculty, and as the type of creativity that we and the University should be pursuing. I followed this discussion with my commitment to make the Winter and Spring terms periods of planning and renewal that would result in many more ideas worth pursuing. I mentioned faculty work in educational gaming and prevention science degree programs as additional field-leading initiatives that we were pursuing.
All in all, this experience was yet another validation of your years of hard work, inventiveness, and commitment. I envision nothing but positive outcomes for our college going forward.
Wishing everyone a great, and much needed, break,
Randy
