Hi colleagues -
I am hoping this is my last communication for a while. I am forwarding Senate President Kyr’s message on an emergency meeting of the Senate to be held tomorrow, Wednesday, 3 to 5:00 in Lawrence Room 115. The university community is urged to attend. The meeting will focus on the Board of Trustees (BOT) resolution and the Academic Integrity Task Force’s report. Both are linked below in his message. The emergency meeting of the Senate Executive committee was well attended last night and covered in the Register Guard here: http://registerguard.com/rg/news/local/32530223-75/uo-faculty-tensions-flare.html.csp .

The RG will undoubtedly cover the Senate meeting, so I won’t be taking notes. The meeting will include presentations from the Senate constituency about the really bad consequences of gutting shared governance. The administration will be there to say it’s all a misunderstanding, as they did last night. The only difference might be if BOT President Lillis attends. At last month’s Senate meeting he told us he didn’t believe in shared governance unless it was collaborative and perhaps he would come to explain to us his definition of collaboration. There will be a resolution condemning in some way the BOT resolution which will most certainly pass and suggesting a way forward in a collaborative fashion.

The BOT meeting is Thursday, 8 am, Ford Ballroom. Public comment is given during the first portion of the meeting. It would be really important to fill the room with our university community, whether or not one actually speaks.

Thank you for your patience in reading these emails, I hope to not bother you again for a while. Surely we can get through the holidays without another crisis.

Best - deborah

RE: University Senate Meeting-- SPECIAL EMERGENCY SESSION ***Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at 3:00-5:00 pm*** Place TBA--check on the Senate website homepage (senate.uoregon.edu)

***FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION TO YOUR STUDENTS and ALL OF YOUR COLLEAGUES***

As you know, I convened the Senate Executive Committee on Monday afternoon to discuss several urgent matters related to the future of shared governance at our university. Following a lively discussion between the Senate Executive Committee, Interim President Scott Coltrane, Senators, and members of the general public, I posed a question to the Senate Executive Committee: "Should there be a special emergency session of the University Senate on this Wednesday in order to consider a motion put forward by the Senate Executive Committee regarding the future of shared governance at the University of Oregon?"

The Senate Executive Committee unanimously advised me to convene the Senate in a Special Session to consider a motion regarding the future of shared governance at our university. Thus, the University Senate will meet in a special emergency session--an open public meeting--on this Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at 3:00-5:00 pm. The place for the meeting will be announced soon; please check the Senate website homepage (senate.uoregon.edu<http://senate.uoregon.edu>) for the location of the meeting.

This meeting has been called because the voice of the entire Senate needs to be heard in regard to the future of shared governance at this critical juncture in the history of our university. Your full participation is essential at this Wednesday's meeting. Please note that we will focus on two topics:

1) BOARD OF TRUSTEES MOTION RE: SHARED GOVERNANCE--
The motion that will be considered by the UO Board of Trustees, "Resolution: Adoption of a Policy on University Policies," which will supersede important aspects of shared governance as guaranteed by the University Charter, the University Constitution, and the University's Policy on Policies. The text of the board's motion is on page 7 of the agenda for "Meeting of the Board; December 11-12, 2014." (https://trustees.uoregon.edu/meetings)

2) UPDATE: SENATE ACADEMIC INTEGRITY TASK FORCE--
An important update from the Senate's Academic Integrity Task Force, and a discussion related to grading and academic policies during the current period of the GTFF strike. The report of the Senate's Academic Integrity Task Force may be accessed by clicking on "Report of the Academic Integrity Task Force" on the Senate homepage (senate.uoregon.edu<http://senate.uoregon.edu>).

The language for the December 10th motion of the Senate Executive Committee will be posted (and distributed to the Senate via email) on Tuesday evening. Please review the motion in preparation for Wednesday's meeting.

The general public is strongly encouraged to attend this important meeting and to participate. I would be grateful if you would please reach out to your students and all of your colleagues with the announcement of this meeting; please invite them to attend.

I look forward to our work together on this coming Wednesday (3:00-5:00 pm) at the special emergency session of the University Senate. My deepest thanks to you for your service--your voice, your expertise, and your wisdom are needed more than ever at this critical time in our history.
