The Education Studies (EDST) Department is pleased to announce the following colloquium presentation by a candidate for the open rank, tenure-related position in Educational Psychology in the Education Studies department of the College of Education.



Title:   YOUTH OF COLOR AND BEING KNOWN:
TEACHING AND LEARNING IN URBAN HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOMS


Dr. Vichet Chhuon, Assistant Professor, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

Emphasizing urban high schools as important developmental spaces for supporting the social and educational needs of diverse students, Dr. Chhuon discusses the significance of being known for youth of color and examines their interpretations of instructional interactions to understand the academic and developmental implications of pedagogy.  He considers how the concept of being known can improve student-teacher relationships, enhance engagement, and offer direction for teaching and learning.

Vichet Chhuon is an assistant professor of Culture and Teaching and Asian American Studies at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. His research agenda examines means for improving the educational experiences of immigrant youth and students of color in U.S. urban schools.
