The Education Studies (EDST) Department is pleased to announce the following colloquium presentation by a candidate for the open rank, tenure-related position in Educational Psychology in the Education Studies department of the College of Education.

Title:   Step into my Shoes: The Importance of Empathy and Learning


Dr. Sharon Tettegah, Associate Professor, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign

Social emotional learning is quickly emerging as a standard educational process for students in K12 schools.  More so than ever educators and psychologists recognize the need to include affective elements in teaching and learning.  Dr. Tettegah's presentation focuses on the interrelationship among moral, cognitive and affective education with an emphasis on empathy and perspective taking in teaching and learning.  Her colloquium will highlight the benefits of empathy and social emotional education processes.  Multiple theoretical frameworks and research findings on empathy and teaching will be presented.
Sharon Tettegah is a former K12 teacher and a current faculty member in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.  She has faculty appointments in Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Psychology, The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, Cognitive Neuroscience Group, and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications.  During 2010-2012 she was a Program Officer at the National Science Foundation.  Her educational background includes a doctorate in Educational Psychology, Master's in Bilingual Education, and an undergraduate degree in Philosophy.
Her research framework is at the intersection of education, psychology, technology, neuroscience, and social justice.  She examines affective, behavioral and cognitive facets of empathy and empathic dispositions using multiple technologies (e.g., functional magnetic resonance imaging, simulations, games).  Her referred journal publications include a wide range of journals from educational psychology journals to various digital media publications.
She is currently the Series Editor of an eight-volume book series with Elsevier Academic Psychology Press Division on Emotions and Technology: Communication of Feelings For, with and through Digital Media, an Associate Editor for Interacting with Computer, a Human Computer Interaction Journal and was the Executive Associate Editor for the International Journal of Games and Computer-Mediated Simulations. She also serves on the Editorial Board for The American Psychological Association's Division 15, as Chair of the Social Media Committee.
