Keynote Speaker: Rosemarie Garland-Thomson
Professor of English and Co-Director of the Disability Studies Initiative,
Emory University
Habitable Worlds: Disability, Technology, and Eugenics
The shape of the material world we build and occupy together expresses and
determines who inhabits it. Professor Garland-Thomson examines how we use
technologiesfrom tools to storiesto make human communities. She addresses
ethical questions about why we might want disability in the world and what
we lose when we eliminate disability. Rosemarie Garland- Thomson is one of
the most influential and respected figures in disability studies. She is the
author of Staring: How We Look, Extraordinary Bodies, and several other
books.
COMMUNITY CONVERSATION 3-5 pm Gerlinger Lounge
Distinguished guests and UO faculty share their visions of disability
studies. Come share yours with us, too. Prof. Garland-Thomson will serve as
respondent. Appetizers and open bar.

Studies Program at the University of Washington and author of Death,
Disability and the Superhero
Both events are free and open to the public and will be ASL interpreted and
