Dear COE Faculty and Staff:

The College-wide committee on internal governance policy has worked hard and has developed a revised document to address the feedback from the union and Academic Affairs. This review has resulted in changes in the document as well as additions to the document. Some changes are for clarity but others are changes in the policy itself. There are two versions of the document attached: one with tracked changes and one “clean”.

A few of the highlights of the revisions are:

1) Addition of language for participation during sabbatical or on leave

2) Committees have been grouped into four categories: administrative, advisory, governance and ad hoc. Wording has been adjusted to clarify the charge and membership.

3) Addition of two committees: one that began last year and seen as important to governance (Department Head Council) and one for NTTF promotion and review (Faculty Personnel Committee for Non-Tenure Track Faculty (FPC-NTTF))

4) To address appropriate and equitable participation by TTF and NTTF there are a number of changes.

a. The membership in some committees has been expanded and some have become elected positions.

b. All committees can propose the need for policy to the dean

c. A new section is added (7) that addresses the general process for policy development

Please take time to review this policy and provide input:

a) Participate in department, program or unit discussions about the policy.

b) Provide input through the COE link https://oregon.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_0e3iL4tUGFPky3j

c) Have conversations/ask questions of the committee members (Deb Olson, Tiffany Brown, Ed Kame’enui, Ben McWhirter, Charles Martinez)

d) Submit edited versions of the “clean” copy of the revised governance document with tracked changes to any of the above or to me (haskins at uoregon.edu<mailto:haskins at uoregon.edu>).

The policy is now open for review by faculty and staff until October 28th. At that time, the Dean will review the policy and faculty comments in order to finalize the policy to return to Academic Affairs by November 3. The Dean will provide feedback to faculty on changes made or suggestions not incorporated, in accordance with policy.

Last, but very important – be sure to thank the committee members when you see them for the time and careful thought they have provided the COE and you through this policy development phase.

Regards,
