Title: The Development of the Spanish Individual Growth and Development Indicators (S-IGDIs):
Design, Calibration, and Standard Setting
Dr. Lillian Durán, Assistant Professor, Utah State University
WHEN: October 20, 2014
PRESENTATION: 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS: 2:30-3:00 p.m.
WHERE: 340 HEDCO Education Building
Dr. Durán will describe the development process of the S-IGDIs with special attention to the linguistic features of Spanish that influenced the design of the instrument. She will lead participants through the initial field study and the calibration and standard setting process. Participants will be able to view the screening sets of the S-IGDIs that are currently being administered along with the English IGDIs 2.0 to over 450 Spanish-speaking preschoolers in California, Florida, Kansas, Minnesota, and Utah. The final goal in the measurement design process is to provide teachers with information about both the Spanish and English early literacy and language abilities of Spanish-English bilingual children to improve instructional decision-making based on the skills children have in each language. The challenges associated with this approach will also be discussed.
Lillian Durán has a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Minnesota and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation at Utah State University. She holds a B.A. in Elementary Education from Antioch College and a M.A. in Education and Human Development from the George Washington University. Her research is focused on improving instructional and assessment practices with preschool-aged dual language learners (DLLs). She is currently a Co-Principal Investigator on an IES Goal 5 measurement grant to develop a Spanish version of the Individual Growth and Development Indicators (S-IGDIs) an early language and literacy general outcome measure for universal screening in preschool. She is also developing a Spanish-English version of Read it Again-PreK, a supplemental language and early literacy preschool curriculum. Dr. Durán has delivered numerous presentations on the topic of recommended practices in assessment and instruction with young DLLs at regional, state, and national conferences. Prior to Dr. Durán's work in higher education she worked for 10 years as an early childhood special education teacher both in Prince George's County, Maryland and in rural south central Minnesota.
