Hello, everyone. My great thanks to all of you who bid on or contributed
to my summer hairstyle, as well as those who have cheered me on. The
money raised will help defray costs for the students participating in
the spring break 2015 Courts for Kids service-learning trip. As you know
if you've booked air travel recently, ticket prices are very high right
now--so high, in fact, that we can't say for sure which country the
students will be going to for this service-learning experiewnce. Courts
for Kids has identified the Dominican Republic and Panama as
possibilities and is watching for a lower fare.
Cody wrote a great article about this fundraising effort. It's at
HTTPS://EDUCATION.UOREGON.EDU/NEWS/JUST-DO-IT-FHS-PROFESSOR-GOES-PUNK-STUDENTS
and includes a video. This has been picked up and linked to by _Around
the O_ at
HTTP://AROUND.UOREGON.EDU/CONTENT/FACULTY-STUDENTS-AND-NEW-DEAN-KEEP-SUMMER-LIVELY-COE
.
I've attached a few photos, including the original cut and some of its
variants, and yesterday's spiffy update, which will be seen by not only
11,000-14,000 of our colleagues at the annual convention of the American
Psychological Association, but my mother.
I've had a button made that says, "No, I didn't lose a bet. Ask me about
Courts for Kids." It's working! I've had a lot of conversations with
strangers in the last month. It's been great to talk about Courts for
Kids, the Service-Learning Program, FHS and EdF, the College's other
programs, our new dean, and the roles of service-learning, voluntarism,
and international exposure for university students. People are amazed by
your generosity, whether in the initial style bidding or in the "better
you than me" contributions afterward. Everyone agrees that we're a
really cool College.
Here's a video slideshow (Wade helped me make it) where you can see our
terrific service-learning students working hard with community partners
in Batey Isabela, DR during spring break 2014:
HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=S8MA4ECJ438 [1] . They're sweaty and
sore, and Internet-deprived. They've been sleeping like sardines on the
floor of an abandoned house, and they say it changed their lives. In a
couple of years, watch for these students in AmeriCorps, the Peace
Corps, and Teach for America--they've got the fire.
You've contributed almost $2000, which will be applied to the students
individual participation fees. I think it's important to note that while
I'll keep working on it, the students are still responsible for their
own fundraising to pay not only the rest of their participation fees,
but also the court fee. This project is also supported through the
generosity of an anonymous donor with a match challenge for the
students. The students kicked off their own fundraising last weekend by
staffing a Eugene Marathon water station. This earned a $300
contribution from the marathon toward their court fee.
I just received a promise of a small donation from an FHS graduate. She
served in the Peace Corps in the DR and helped orient me before our 2014
trip. She's headed to graduate school now, and wants to show her support
for the experience these students will have.
I'M WRITING TODAY TO ASK YOU TO TAKE MY FUNDRAISING OVER $2000--TO $2500
WOULD BE GREAT! I'M TRYING TO MODEL FOR THE STUDENTS THAT IT'S OKAY TO
ASK FOR DONATIONS FOR A GOOD CAUSE, THAT FUNDRAISING CAN BE CREATIVE,
AND THAT EVEN SMALL DONATIONS ADD UP. I hasten to add that I don't
anticipate doing this kind of fundraising again any time soon. This is a
demonstration, not an ongoing practice!
You can write a check to Courts for Kids and leave it in my box on HEDCO
3rd, or I can pick it up at your office, or you can follow the
instructions in Cody's article (be sure you specify "Shoshana's hair").
Help us make this trip a reality for this year's students!
Thank you very much for your generosity and support,
Shoshana
