Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Department of Educational Methodology, Policy, and Leadership it is my pleasure to introduce incoming tenure-track assistant professor Ilana Umansky to the COE community of scholars.

Ms. Umansky will soon receive her Ph.D. from Stanford Graduate School of Education in Sociology of Education, with an emphasis in Race, Inequality, and Language in Education. She is currently a Graduate Research Assistant on the San Francisco English Learner Pathways Project and the California Small District Project on English Learners, both at Stanford University.

Ilana's research lies at the intersection of education, immigration and language. Bringing together policy analysis and sociological theory, she studies the educational opportunities, experiences, and outcomes of immigrant and English learner students. Using rigorous quantitative methods, her work examines topics including course access, language of instruction, reclassification, and the impact of the "English learner" label. She is particularly focused on the mechanisms that drive policy effects on student outcomes, and works closely with school districts to ensure that her scholarship can be utilized by practitioners to create greater educational equity and excellence for immigrant and English learner-classified students.

EMPL faculty could not be more excited about Ilana joining us when she officially arrives on campus in the winter term. Wearing my other hat as a center director, I am thrilled to welcome Ilana to the researcher ranks in the Center for Equity Promotion.

As the chair of the search committee, I want to give special thanks to members of the search committee-Dr. Keith Zvoch (EMPL), Dr. Gina Biancarosa (EMPL), Dr. Joanna Goode (EDST), and Mr. George Russell (community) for their tireless work, and to Ms. Jennifer McGovney (EMPL), Ms. Mara Kanbergs (EMPL), and Ms. Amy Green (COE) for their administrative assistance. Finally, a big thank you to Interim Dean Mia Tuan who provided essential support and leadership throughout the search process.

Please join me and welcoming Ilana (cc'ed) and her family to the COE family, and to the larger community.

My best,

Charles Martinez
