Hi Collegues - the Senate has been very busy! There were 3 meetings in April and 1 already in May to report on. I apologize for being tardy with reports, but my computer had "issues" through most of April. Rather than attach minutes to all of these meeting, I'm going to summarize a few, include some important links and give you my notes to the last meeting. First however, the Senate is holding an open forum entitled: a Response to Sexual Assault on Wednesday, May 21 at 3:00. Please see the senate home page: http://senate.uoregon.edu/ for a description. They will be discussing a draft senate resolution that will be voted on at the next Senate meeting on May 28.
On April 9, the Senate passed legislation extending academic freedom to all members of the UO community. It specifically gives all members the right to address, question or criticize institutional policies. This important legislation has not yet been signed by President Gottfredson. You can see it at: http://senate.uoregon.edu/content/academic-freedom-policy .
The April 23rd meeting saw the passage of the Open Meeting legislation that had been previously presented and tabled. The revised motion that passed can be seen here: http://senate.uoregon.edu/content/open-committee-meetings . I've reduced my notes on this meeting to just pertaining to this legislation and I'm attaching them.
The April 30th meeting was kind of a snoozer so I'm not attaching my notes, but if anyone wants them please let me know. This special meeting was called to begin to address the legislation that is coming out of the Senate's 10 year review of all standing committees. Earlier in the term we broke into small groups and were assigned a committee or group of committees to review (I got all the appeals committees). These reviews were then in turn reviewed by the Senate executive committee and legislation changing format and charges of these committees is coming in small batches to the Senate as a whole for approval. The committees reviewed and whose charges were approved were the following: Academic Council, Faculty Research Awards, LGBTQI Concerns, NTTF, International Scholarships, the OA Council and ROTC Advisory. The agenda from this meeting can be found by clicking through the senate home page to meetings and the April 30th date. I don't believe the official minutes are out yet. The May 28 meeting will contain the remaining committee changes.
The May 14th was a hot one, as those of you who attended at least the first part, can attest. The majority of the agenda was postponed for a discussion of the university response to the recent, highly publicized case of sexual assault. During spring term I teach until 3:20 on Wednesdays and so I arrive late to these meetings, missing the bulk of President Gottfredson's remarks. You can find his remarks from this meeting on his webpage: http://president.uoregon.edu/content/remarks-university-senate-may-14-2014 and I am attaching my notes to this email. Please attend the open forum on this topic.
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments about any of these issues.
Best regards - deborah
