Substance Abuse Prevention Program (SAPP)



The UO Department of Counseling Psychology and Human Services, in conjunction with UO Academic Extension (AE), is hiring a full-time Career-Non Tenure Track Faculty member to serve as Program Director for the Substance Abuse Prevention Program (SAPP). This position is at Instructor rank.  This position is for 9 months, fixed term, 1.00 FTE, and is renewable on an annual basis and then subsequently per the United Academics/University of Oregon Collective Bargaining Agreement.  Employment begins September 16, 2014. Summer employment negotiated separately and is commensurate with program need.



The SAPP Program Director will develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate curricular and outreach programs of the Substance Abuse Prevention Program (SAPP).  The mission of SAPP is to provide education and to increase awareness in the areas of alcohol and other drugs for prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery.  SAPP provides students and professionals with opportunities to meet their academic and career goals. Through fields of study or licensure programs, a unique learning environment for professional growth and development are afforded.

The SAPP courses, both credit and non-credit, are administered in a cost-recovery fiscal model through Academic Extension (AE). All academic oversight, curricular approval, and program development and changes are managed by the UO Department of Counseling Psychology and Human Services (CPHS) in the College of Education as the home academic unit. The Program Director of SAPP will work closely with other SAPP and CPHS faculty and staff on all operational and curriculum issues, as well as with CPHS and AE staff on operational and infrastructure functions. The Program Director of SAPP will report to the CPHS Department Head as well as to the Director of AE.

Essential functions

Curriculum Oversight and Instruction, approximately 80% of position
*     Develop, monitor and evaluate educational curricula and materials, including oversight of content and instructors.
*     In conjunction with the CPHS department head or designee, review applicants for SAPP adjunct instructional roles.
*     Supervise and evaluate administrative GTF(s).
*     Provide classroom teaching, preparation, and evaluation of student assignments and exams/projects associated with your own classes. Some courses meet during evenings, weekends, or online.
*     Serve as co-instructor of record and supervisor for instructors without graduate degrees and GTF.
*     Respond to student conduct issues as described in university policies.
*     Hold scheduled office hours.
*     Participate in designated staff meetings at both COE and AE.
*     Initiate and follow through with existing and new course approval processes for all SAPP courses and workshops through the COE and up to the UO curriculum committee. This includes review of new and updated courses and syllabi, and assuring syllabi are commensurate with College of Education standards and practices, and clarifying course numbering.
*     Work with Professional Development team to enhance the course offerings in this area, including new hybrid and online courses.

Outreach, approximately 20% of position
*     Participate in some collaborative projects between SAPP and both on-and off-campus partners, including quarterly OCASE meetings.
*     Work with the programs' leadership teams to pursue grant and other funding for ongoing curriculum building and outreach programs.
*     Maintain ongoing contact and communication with administrators both in AE and CPHS.

Minimum qualifications of an effective Program Director

*     Doctoral degree in a relevant field, such as Social Work, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Human Services, Marriage and Family Therapy, or a similar degree.
*     Demonstrated ability for high quality teaching at college/university level.
*     Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
*     Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
*     Excellent information technology skills including content management systems, productivity tools and other applicable technologies.
*     Evidence of curriculum development, and mentoring/oversight of other practitioners and instructors.
*     Experience with budget analysis and budget planning.

Preferred qualifications of an effective Program Director

*     Local and regional connections in prevention, substance abuse treatment, human services or similar fields.
*     Practitioner experience in Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Substance Prevention/Dependence or a similar field.
*     Licensing or certification credentials in Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Substance Prevention/Dependence or a similar field.
