Given some recent events in the news and on campus, COEIT would like to pass along a few tips on keeping your computer and data secure.

• Beware email attachments. Never click on an email attachment you were not expecting, and never from an unknown email address.

• Remember only one password. By using a password manager, such as KeePass<http://keepass.info/> for Windows or Keychain Access<http://www.macworld.com/article/2013756/how-to-manage-passwords-with-keychain-access.html> for MacOS, you not only protect your passwords from prying eyes, but you can use more secure passwords because you don’t have to store them all in your head.

• Tireless wireless. If you take two minutes to setup a connection to the UOsecure<https://it.uoregon.edu/uo-secure> wireless connection you will be connected automatically when on campus, and all communications will be encrypted. Go to https://wireless.uoregon.edu/ to set up a UOsecure connection.

• Connect to UOVPN. The Internet can be a scary place, especially outside of the UO network. When off campus, use Cisco AnyConnect<https://it.uoregon.edu/vpn/anyconnect> to connect to the UO Virtual Private Network (UOVPN) and work comfortably knowing that no matter what network you are on, your transmissions are secure. You also get access to any UO network services such as college file-servers and UO library databases.
