Title: Integrating Instructional Design Science and Gaming Technology within an
Iterative Development-Efficacy Framework
Dr. Hank Fien, Research Associate Professor, University of Oregon
WHEN: February 17, 2014
PRESENTATION: 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS: 2:30-3:00 p.m.
WHERE: 340 HEDCO Education Building
In his colloquium, Dr. Fien will present a brief historical perspective and overview of instructional design and delivery features and his current theory of change to improve student outcomes through the architecture of instruction. He will provide a summary of his portfolio of print-based interventions that have been iteratively developed and rigorously tested through sponsored research and provide themes of impact across content areas and grade levels. Dr. Fien will then describe his most recent work on developing a comprehensive gaming intervention, Numbershire, designed to improve whole number concepts and skills for students with and at risk for math disabilities in kindergarten through second grade. He will conclude with a summary of impact results from a recent randomized controlled trial of the first grade Numbershire Intervention, including an analysis of moderators of treatment impact.
Hank Fien is a Research Associate Professor and Co-Director of the Center on Teaching and Learning at the University of Oregon. Currently, he serves as co-Principal Investigator on ten federally-sponsored research and development grants studying the feasibility and efficacy of early reading and early math curricula and interventions. Most recently, Dr. Fien has directed several grants to develop a series of learning games targeting whole number concepts and skills. His publications have appeared in journals such as Journal of Learning Disabilities, Learning Disabilities Quarterly, School Psychology Review, Elementary School Journal, School Effectiveness and School Improvement, Educational Leadership, and Assessment for Effective Intervention. His research interests include reading and mathematics development in young children, integrating instructional design and gaming technology, and empirically validating interventions aimed at preventing or ameliorating student academic problems.
