Dear COE Community,
The pace has certainly picked up campus-wide as a result of ratification of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, passage of the UO's first Institutional Board, adjustments being made to the Oregon Budget Model, and everything else that occurs in the fall. In short, there's a lot going on right now, with many quick deadlines. In an effort to keep faculty/staff in the information loop, here is a brief update on what we, in the Dean's Office, are currently working on:
Implementation of the CBA: CBA implementation, without a doubt, is the dominant item on our agenda these days. Most immediately, the Dean's Office (coordinated by Lauren Lindstrom, Ron Beghetto, and Diane O'Keefe) is working with department heads and business managers on implementing salary increases and establishing policies/procedures for merit increases. We are also working on the one-time reclassification of NTTF and other impending action items. We have invited Senior Vice Provost Doug Blandy and Vice Provost Barbara Altmann to speak to our faculty about specific aspects of the CBA implementation. The event is tentatively scheduled for December 13th from 3:00 to 5:00pm in Hedco 220, with the format still to be determined.
University-wide Assessment Planning: This fall the UO has launched a campus-wide assessment planning effort as part of our accreditation with the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). Lauren Lindstrom, Angie Whalen, and the department heads are coordinating the work involved on behalf of the College.
Budget: Changes are being made to the university budget model and feedback is being solicited by central administration from the deans. I have been meeting with many people within the college to craft our key points in order to advocate on behalf of our people and programs. Stay tuned for more information.
Tenure/Promotion Cases: Fall is the season for colleges/schools to submit files to the Provost for faculty candidates seeking tenure and promotion. The Dean's Office is working to ensure that our excellent cases are in top shape to be submitted.
University-level Strategic Priority Setting: In anticipation of our new Institutional Board coming fully online, President Gottfredson is shifting his priorities to campus-wide academic goal setting. Again, this is an excellent opportunity for the College to make the case for its longstanding record of excellence, especially according to AAU metrics (the "gold" standard among research universities), and to advocate for more resources.
In closing, thanks to all of you for making this college a remarkable place and best wishes as we approach the holiday season.
Mia
