Dear Colleagues,

Today we formally launch the College of Education's official internal news resource<https://coe.uoregon.edu/coe-news>. It's not a newsletter, but rather a very simple news site that is easy to navigate and search, and aligns more with the way most people consume information in 2013. It is intended to broaden and enhance communication at the college, foster collaboration, and enhance the sense of community. The tone is informal and, preferably, light. Content can be serious, frivolous, or anything in between that could benefit or amuse your colleagues at the COE. Marketing and Communications reserves the right to edit your submissions and judge their appropriateness. Examples might include:

  * Pithy, conversational updates about your areas, such as faculty or staff departures or arrivals, awards, major grants, upcoming events, or even mini editorials on any subject related to your focus areas
  * Burning questions for which answers could benefit others, like, "What's the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?"
  * Information of a more personal, water-cooler nature, like an adventure, hobby, or major milestone you’re willing to share
  * Photos or video, or other online resources you find useful, interesting or amusing
  * Stuff you have for sale, recipes, satire, Twilight fan fiction, your knitting blog, etc.

Some guidelines for you as a consumer and potential contributor:

  1. Submit news as it occurs to you, not on any particular schedule. We will remind you a couple times per term about the site and highlight recent submissions.
  2. Favor the vernacular. If your submission contains words like "schema" or "synthesize," it probably needs some massaging.
  3. Try and include photos if possible. Chances are, you have some sort of camera with you at all times.
  4. Don't pre-judge your news as to who may find it interesting. It's our job to help determine the appropriate audience and venue.
  5. Consider bookmarking the site (CTRL-D or Command-D on most browsers, or click the address and drag it down into your bookmarks toolbar).

Though the site will not be password-protected, it also won’t be promoted beyond the COE, other than to development officers as a way to keep abreast of what’s going on here (for now, it will take the place of the Development Brief begun in late August, so we won't ask you for separate donor-specific news items). Some stories you submit may lend themselves to external news, at our discretion but only with your approval.

This particular theme was chosen for its simplicity, but the "look" of the site may change over time. At present it is not a responsive theme, so it is only so-so on mobile devices. Be patient. As for the boring name, tell us what you think it should be called – unless "COE News" grabs you.

How to use it
The link is https://coe.uoregon.edu/coe-news. That won't change even if the name changes.

The site is divided into categories, each of which has a link in the top menu. For example, if you're only interested in stories related to academics, click "Academics" at the top or choose a specific area within Academics. Or use the search bar to look for words or phrases. The front page will always show all stories in reverse chronological order. Older news will automatically be archived by month at the bottom of landing pages and the side of individual posts.
