Dear COE Faculty and Staff:

As the Provost noted at the end-of-term faculty/staff meeting on Friday, March 15th, an interim dean will be selected to fill the COE Dean's position for the upcoming academic year, beginning September 1, 2013 and ending when a new dean is appointed-perhaps by July 1, 2014, if not earlier.

The college's executive leadership team (Associate Deans, Assistant Dean, and I) met with the Provost yesterday afternoon to discuss the selection process for both the interim and "permanent" dean's position. The Provost charged us with identifying the communities within the COE (.e.g., tenure-line faculty, classified, non-tenure track faculty including officers of instruction and officers of research, Officers of Administration) to ensure appropriate representation on the Search Committee. That search committee, which will be established during the spring term, will in turn develop a "Challenge Document" designed to inform potential dean candidates about the "challenges" and opportunities in the COE, and assist in the development of an RFP (Request for Proposal) for a search firm to conduct and direct a national search for a new dean.

In addition, the Provost detailed the process he will follow in the appointment of an "internal" faculty member to serve as interim dean. As a next step, he will prepare a communication to the entire COE community detailing the timeline and process for COE faculty and staff to submit nominations and self-nominations for the interim Dean position, including criteria and qualifications. He anticipates distributing this communication to the COE after his return to campus on April 2nd. Please look for a communication from the Provost then.

Finally, the Provost anticipates making a decision on the appointment of an interim dean in early May. The interim dean will then work with Mike until September 1, 2013, when Mike transitions out of the COE Dean's position.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Regards,

Shaun Haskins
