The complexity of creating culturally responsive classrooms and schools
is apt to require partnerships and collaborations across disciplines,
professions, and methodologies. The PEER group housed in the Institute
on Violence and Destructive Behavior in the University of Oregon's
College of Education provides a forum where individuals sharing an
interest and passion for educational equity can come together, exchange
ideas, compare approaches, and learn from each other.
Work focuses on assisting states with the implementation of IDEA, mining
extant databases, recruiting and training Native American teachers,
developing and implementing staff trainings in cultural knowledge and
self awareness, developing videos to raise awareness of cultural
discontinuities, working with parents of non-White students, and shaping
school systems that facilitate equitable student outcomes.
*_The mission of the University Center for Excellence in Developmental
Disabilities (UCEDD)_
/is to be of assistance in improving the quality of life for Oregonians
and all persons with developmental disabilities and their families. To
accomplish this mission, we provide interdisciplinary training,
networking and model development, technical assistance and dissemination
activities that address, in a culturally competent fashion, the multiple
needs//of individuals and their families from diverse racial, cultural,
ethnic, and linguistic groups. In the conduct of our activities, we
strive to acknowledge our consumer's experiences while honoring and
respecting their diversity./*
