Members of the College of Education Community:
I am saddened to inform you that Dr. Harry F. Wolcott died on October 31st. Dr. Walcott worked for more than two decades in the College of Education. He was hired at the University of Oregon in 1964, the same year that he completed his doctorate at Stanford, and retired in 1999 as an emeritus faculty in anthropology. His scholarship focused on anthropology and education, cultural acquisition, and the nature of ethnographic research.
Dr. Walcott's publications are extensive and his influence on the practice of educational research has been, and remains, profound. He was regarded as one of the leading authorities on qualitative research procedures in the world and continued to publish professionally well after his retirement. To name but a few of his achievements, he had a Fulbright award in 1985-86; earned the Critics' Choice Award from the American Educational Studies Association for Transforming Qualitative Data in 1994; and was recognized with the Special Career Award in Qualitative Inquiry by the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry in 2010.
I will pass along information regarding a service or memorial when those details are available.
Mike
