The Vice President for Research and Innovation is pleased to announce the 2013 Faculty Research Awards competition. As significant changes have taken place in this program (formerly the Summer Research Awards), please review the following information carefully.

The purpose of the Faculty Research Awards program is to stimulate research by providing faculty with support for research expenses. Up to twenty awards will be made. Eligible faculty may apply in one of two areas of emphasis:

Enhancing Scholarship Impact funds distinctive, innovative, and creative research projects that contribute to the University of Oregon's reputation for intellectual excellence and for which external sponsorship is not available.

Seeding Funding Success funds distinctive, innovative, and creative research projects to obtain pilot data or demonstrate feasibility, enhancing the competitiveness of the proposed project and its prospects for obtaining external funding.

Projects which fund Graduate Research Fellows are eligible for funding to a maximum of $8,000 if fully matched by funds from non-RIGE sources. Projects that do not provide support for Graduate Research Fellows are eligible for funding up to $5,500. Funds may be used for travel, equipment, supplies, contractual services, shared facility use, and graduate or undergraduate student research assistance. Funds may NOT be used to replace or fund faculty salary or stipend, for instructional release / course buyouts, or for construction or facility renovation.

The deadline for receipt of 2013 proposals is 5:00 PM, November 30, 2012.

Applications are available online at http://rfd.uoregon.edu/content/faculty-research-awards-2013.

Applications that do not conform to the guidelines will be returned without review.

The review process remains the same as in the past. The Faculty Research Awards Committee, composed of faculty appointed by the University Senate, will evaluate proposals on the basis of their intellectual or artistic merit and recommend up to 20 proposals for funding to the Vice President. Proposals should be written in clear, jargon-free language, and provide a coherent and succinct statement of the project that can be understood by peers from various disciplines.

Awardees will be notified in February, 2013. Projects should begin by July 1, 2013, and be completed by June 30, 2014. Final reports are due by July 31, 2014.

An information session on the Faculty Research Awards will be held on Nov. 7 from 12-1:30pm in 506 PHNB in Research and Innovation Services, 677 E. 12th Avenue, to provide an opportunity for faculty to ask questions about eligibility, proposal requirements, and award conditions.

Questions should be directed to Lynn Stearney, Director, Research Development Services, 346-8308 (Stearney at uoregon.edu<mailto:Stearney at uoregon.edu>) .
