JULY 30, 2012

MEMORANDUM

TO: Campus Building Managers

FROM: Debbie Cadigan, Campus Relations Manager, Campus Operations, University of Oregon

SUBJECT: Steam Release

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, July 30th, 31st & August 1st, Central Power Plant will vent steam. Each steam release should last approximately 15 minutes and no more than 20 minutes. Steam releases will occur between 7:00am - 7:30am, 12:00pm - 12:30pm, 4:00 pm - 4:30 pm and 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm.

Measures have been taken to divert the noise towards the river and away from campus, neighboring businesses, neighborhoods and downtown.

One should expect to hear a strong "whoosh" sound, a bit like a loud fan or a freight train.
The strength of the noise will be dependent on your location, weather conditions, winds, whether one's windows are open or closed and a variety of other factors.

This procedure is needed to clean out newly installed steam pipes and verify safety valves that are part of our new co-generation system being installed at CPS. This process involves sending steam through the pipes to flush out the particulates, dirt, and rust located in the pipes prior to connecting them to our new steam turbine.

Please forward to colleagues and others in your building.

We appreciate your patience and understanding. If you have any questions, please contact Jeff Madsen, Energy Systems Manager, Campus Operations, at 346-2256 or jmadsen at uoregon.edu<mailto:jmadsen at uoregon.edu> or myself at 346-2389.
