Dear COE colleagues,
This year's UOTeachOUT program was an unqualified success.
70+ administrators, teachers, teacher educators, and clergy attended a
workshop on policy and practices that support LGBTQ youth and families.
Two documentary screenings drew 100+ UO students for conversations about
breaking silences about sexuality in elementary classrooms and about LGBTQ
youth activism in public schools.
100+ Middle school students and their teacher sponsors received education,
encouragement, and support for beginning Gay-Straight alliances at their
school and for expecting more inclusivity from schools generally.
80+ Teachers were provided education about how to support LGBTQ students and
faculty and how to effectively sponsor and support the formation of
gay-straight alliance at their schools.
The goal of these efforts is to break silences about gender and sexual
diversity in public schools and to build capacity for addressing the needs
and rights of LGBTQ students and families in schools. (You can't address
the needs of people who are intimidated into silence.) There is a lot less
silence in local schools after this last week's events. Special thanks to
Dr. Julie Heffernan and Tina Gutierez-Schmich for their leadership and hard
work that made these events possible.
Please check out the front page article about the events in the Register
Guard.
