This course will start by engaging students in defining what the school-to-prison pipeline is and identifying what policies and practices
contribute to its existence. Grounded in critical race theory, students in this course will examine how schools became the epicenter of ethnic and racial disparities that have translated into unconscionable incarceration rates in the United States for BIPOC
individuals. Relying on research across different aspects of life, schooling, and human development, students in this course will engage in rich discussions around feasible practices that empower educators to disrupt the pipeline and bolster protective factors
for youth, families, and communities. The primary focus of the course will be exploring promising practices for stemming the flow of students from educational settings to the criminal justice system. The primary goal of this course is to deepen the understanding
of these practices in a manner that enables students to develop clear, actionable research ideas in this area. The structure of this class will facilitate individual specialization for students on topics of interest.
