Hi all,

Just wanted to make sure you have the information for the Leona Tyler Lecture tomorrow—please note the changed location!

We will be hosting Dr. Farzana Tabitha Saleem<https://ed.stanford.edu/faculty/fsaleem1> for the Leona Tyler Lecture this Friday (3/10) from 3:30-5:00pm in Fenton Hall 110 (note the updated location). There will be a Zoom option (see below), but we hope that those who are able will attend in person. This is one of the two endowed lectures in our department, so we are hoping for a great showing.

There will also be an opportunity for faculty to meet with Dr. Saleem from 12pm-1pm in Straub 257. We hope that everyone who feels comfortable will also join the reception following the lecture in Gerlinger Lounge, where there will be food, desserts, and drinks from 5pm-7pm.

For those of you who cannot join in person, here is the Zoom link: https://uoregon.zoom.us/j/97861249804?pwd=K2VpTW5yc1llK3lraWV6WFJSYjR0Zz09. The lecture will be recorded for those of you who cannot attend, but we do hope to see many of you there virtually or in person!

Best,
Jen

Title: Exploring and Addressing Race-Related Stressors, Socialization, and Adolescent Wellbeing

Abstract: Empirical studies and theoretical models indicate that race-related stressors are important factors that account for racial disparities across the life course. Encounters with race-related stressors can lead to negative psychological consequences for children and adolescents of color. Thus, it is important to understand how experiences with racism and discrimination influence youth’s mental health, adjustment, and well-being within and across salient contexts (e.g., family, neighborhood, school). Beyond acknowledging the reality and impact of race-related stressors it is critical to identity factors that can promote healing and resistance across development and contexts. The presentation will highlight the role and contextual nuance of ethnic-racial socialization, with a focus on African Americans within the United States. Dr. Saleem will also discuss pieces of her research trajectory and dedication to community-engaged translational science.

Best,

Jen
