Below are answers to some of your pressing questions!
How will classes work remotely?
This will vary from class to class as professors figure out what works best for the type of classes they teach. Some classes may require you to virtually “be in class” during the scheduled class period (synchronous delivery); whereas, others may put everything online so you can work through it at your own pace (asynchronous delivery). Be sure to clarify this with your instructor to be sure you are actively participating and meeting expectations.
Where can I go for more information or resources?
The COE has a student resource page located here: https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coestudentresources/
If there are resources you think should be added to the page, email coesas at uoregon.edu<mailto:coesas at uoregon.edu> to let us know.
What about group work?
Canvas is set up to allow groups of students to work together—usually using the discussion board option. It’s possible you’ll even find group work easier when you don’t all have to meet in the same room! If you are unsure about how to use these features in canvas be sure to let your instructor know so they can help you.
What about office hours?
All professors will have contact through Canvas messaging and chat, as well as regular email. Some may also set up virtual office hours using something like Zoom videoconferencing software. Be sure to provide professors with feedback on what’s working well and what isn’t so that we can all learn and adjust as we go.
Will professors expect more work from us because we’re working remotely?
No. The amount of work will not increase. We’re all working to ensure you get the basic course concepts, but we also understand that this is a new learning process for the majority of us which will take up some of everyone’s time. Keeping lines of communication open with your professors and GEs will be especially helpful during this time.
INTERNET ACCESS, TECHNOLOGY & EQUIPMENT NEEDS
What if I don’t have good internet access at home?
A few things can help—make sure the bandwidth in your home isn’t being taken up with other uses while you’re trying to be “in class.” Cut out streaming of music, movies, etc. to improve bandwidth. Set up a work space in a quiet area of your home to improve your ability to hear and to follow. Consider improving your internet access by investigating low-cost or free internet options<https://service.uoregon.edu/TDClient/2030/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=101263> . If necessary, as a last resort, the COE Learning Commons is still open to students who have limited access to resources or internet at their homes. If you do go to the Learning Commons, the equipment is being sanitized regularly and social distancing rules are in place.
What about technology and equipment needs?
If possible, try not to wait until immediately before your class to verify that you have access to the systems and programs you need. Start familiarizing yourself with aspects of Canvas you may not have used before, as well as the videoconferencing technology such as Zoom, which is now available to everyone. Explore resources such as the Laptop Loaner<https://service.uoregon.edu/TDClient/2030/Portal/Requests/ServiceDet?ID=42589> being offered or the link to low-cost or free internet options<https://service.uoregon.edu/TDClient/2030/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=101263>. If you are having problems with technology, contact: https://coehelp.uoregon.edu/; if you have equipment needs, contact staff at the Learning Commons at coeit at uoregon.edu<mailto:coeit at uoregon.edu>

ADVISING
How do I get Academic Advising?
All advising appointments are being held via phone or video/screen sharing. Undergraduate students can see the COE Advising<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coeadvising/> website for instructions to connect with an advisor. To schedule online using Navigate, click here: https://uess.uoregon.edu/navigate.<https://uess.uoregon.edu/navigate>
OTHER RELATED QUESTIONS
What if I have questions that my professors can’t seem to answer or issues that aren’t being addressed?
Send an email to lfortin at uoregon.edu<mailto:lfortin at uoregon.edu> and she will help connect you with the resources you need!
What will help me succeed in a remote-learning class?
Besides the suggestions above, it helps if you are able to stick to a regular routine, and follow a daily schedule. In some cases this might take a bit more self-discipline than attending your face-to-face classes did, but some of you may find that this remote environment actually suits your own learning style much better! Regardless of your preferences, do stay in touch with your professors if you are having difficulty following the course content, learning new material, or keeping up with the rest of the class. We are here to support you!
Take care everyone! Stay home, stay healthy, and stay engaged!
