Hello all,

This is just a reminder and some encouragement to attend The Conversation workshop scheduled for Thursday February 15, 3:30-4:30 in HEDCO 230T.

As I’m sure you’re all too aware, one of the key things that can help to establish your reputations as leading national experts is publishing. This of course first refers to peer-reviewed research, but then secondly as published editorial content to a broader audience both nationally and globally. The latter helps us increase the interest of others in our peer-reviewed research, both mainstream audiences and peer researchers who may have missed journal publications. Secondly, inclusion of our experts in mainstream news outlets can elevate the reputation of our college and increase recruitment amongst Master’s and Doctoral students – we know from surveys and research that students are drawn to colleges with esteemed faculty - particularly graduate level students who will often be researching alongside these experts. While I am here to support our college in establishing greater awareness of our programs and faculty, pieces crafted directly by faculty that are published by The Conversation (and then often re-published by larger national outlets) is by far one of the best ways to highlight your work and expertise.

I encourage you to attend this great workshop to establish a connection with the Executive Director of The Conversation, and to also gain tips and insights on what makes a topic most appealing for publication.

Please RSVP via email Molly.Blancett at uoregon.edu<mailto:Molly.Blancett at uoregon.edu> or Robertsj at uoregon.edu<mailto:Robertsj at uoregon.edu> so we can ensure we have enough space and an appropriate set-up for the number of participants.

If you cannot attend our COE-specific workshop, we encourage you to attend the university-wide workshop the following day (details in the message below).

Best,
Jessica

Subject: RSVP today: Free Workshop with The Conversation Executive Director

Hello all,

The executive director of The Conversation, Bruce Wilson, will be on campus February 15-16. While there will be a broader session for all faculty on campus, I have negotiated for us to have our own COE focused workshop for our faculty members interested in learning how to write for the site’s non-academic audiences.

What: Free COE Workshop with The Conversation
When: Thursday, February 15 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Where: HEDCO 230-T

As a recap from Kyle Henley and Molly Blancett’s presentation at our last Faculty and Staff meeting, The Conversation is an independent, nonprofit publisher of commentary and analysis, authored by academics and edited by journalists for the general public. The site publishes short articles (800-1,000 words) by academics on timely topics related to their research. By writing, academics can reach audiences in publications locally, nationally, and internationally. Stories are regularly republished in large national outlets such as The Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, CNN, Scientific American and many more. Through partnerships with The Associated Press and Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc. articles are picked up in local newspapers – providing analysis in communities that may not otherwise hear from these academics. Many of our peer faculty at other universities across the country and around the world are also paying attention to what The Conversation is publishing, or stories that are republished from this site.

During the workshop, Wilson will guide attendees through how to craft a pitch and advise them on what it takes to write for The Conversation.

Wilson is a former publisher of The Chronicles of Higher Education and Philanthropy. He also served as the director of higher education at NBC Learn.

To attend, email Molly Blancett at blancett at uoregon.edu<mailto:blancett at uoregon.edu>.

While we encourage you to attend this workshop specific to the COE, if you are unable to make this time, you are encouraged to join the university-wide workshop scheduled the following day:
What: All UO Workshop with The Conversation
When: Friday from 10:30 am -11:30 am
Where: EMU Lease Crutcher Room 23.

I hope you all can attend.

Best,
Jessica
