Permanent Course and Program Review during Winter 2016

Course Review. The UO is still using CourseLeaf. All courses can be reviewed throughout the year through CourseLeaf Management System (https://nextcatalog.uoregon.edu/courseadmin/).

There are 5 courses that were reviewed by the
* EDUC 613 Philosophy of Research: Exploring Foundational Questions - New course. Course has been held at COECC until a committee designed to review the EDUC policy has completed its work.
* ASL 311 ASL for Educators drop this course
* CDS 446 Services for Deaf Students this is the current ASL 311 with a change to CDS and a new name
* FHS 331: Group and Community Interventions. Title change
* FHS 330: Individual Interventions in Ecological Contexts. Title change

A large number of courses were approved by the Senate and thus are in an attachment (Full report at https://registrar.uoregon.edu/sites/registrar1.uoregon.edu/files/pdf/uo-curriculum-report-201602-winter-2017.pdf ):

The due date for course submissions for review this spring is April 28th.

Program Review.

* The Dean of the College of Education, with endorsement by the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Excellence, has approved discontinuing the Education Studies major previously offered by the Department of Education Studies. The major has not been in use since 2007 when the Educational Foundations major was approved, and has no students enrolled in the major. Effective Fall 2017.

* The Dean of the College of Education, with endorsement by the associate vice provost for academic excellence, has approved discontinuing the bachelor of education in educational foundations offered by the Department of Education Studies. The degree has not been awarded since 2011 and the department no longer advises students to pursue this option. Students either complete the bachelor of arts or the bachelor of science in educational foundations. There are currently no students pursuing the bachelor of education. Effective Fall 2017.

The next date for program submissions for review will be in early fall 2017.

Academic Extension
Just a quick reminder to faculty. When you approve an AE course at the department level you are indicating that the course meets your department standards for course content and level of rigor. These courses will be on the participant's transcripts with your department/program prefix and in most cases a graduate credit.
There were two courses approved in winter for Academic Extension:

* EDLD 608 Building Leadership and Equity Skills to Improve Education Systems II

* CFT 608 Adolescent Girls and Resilience

EDUC Courses and Requirements
After discussion as a committee and then with the Dean to regarding the EDUC coursework and requirements, The COE CC has requested the Dean create a committee to complete a full review of the courses, policy, and management for EDUC. As a result the COECC also decided to hold on their decision regarding moving EDUC 613 forward for vote. This means that no Philosophy of Research: Exploring Foundational Questions course will be offered in the fall by EDUC. EDST will offer a course in the fall using the developed syllabi and information about this course is available from Lisa Mazzei or Jerry Rosiek.

Senate Approved Policies

Upon recommendation of the undergraduate council, the Senate approved US16/17-13: Amendment to the Credit-Bearing General Limitations to the Bachelor's Requirements. Effective Fall 2017.

COE Curriculum Committee and Curriculum Resources
Your committee representatives are listed below. I strongly recommend that you keep them informed of any course or program modifications or additions. The names with * are seats that are open next year. Please consider volunteering for this service.

* EDST: Audrey Lucero, Jeanne Hall

* SPECS: Chris Murray, Angie Whalen*

*         CPHS: Deanna Linville-Knobelspiesse, Kathy Moxley-South*
The COE Curriculum Resources are available on the COE Governance page: https://coedocs.uoregon.edu/display/governance/COE+Governance+and+Policies

On this site you will find such things as:

*         Current syllabi information

*         Approved COE Curriculum policy

*         EDUC courses

* Calendars of COE program and course process
There are a number of forms and policies that people often look for but have difficulty finding. I have temporarily made a section on the Governance page titles "Forms and Policies" that has some of these. If there are others we should add let Mercedes know (mercedr at uoregon.edu<mailto:mercedr at uoregon.edu>) and we will try and locate and link it.

Coming in Spring 2017

* Due to policies passed by the UG Council and Graduate Council as well as Senate, in the next 3 years COE will need to submit each course that is taught in hybrid or online format through the UOCC for approval.

* COECC approved a change to the COE Curriculum Policy and Procedures to reduce the types of course approval to 2 - exempt (approval by Associate Dean) and Full review. This amendment to the current policy will be distributed for vote in early spring 2017.
