The following email is sent on behalf of Dean Randy Kamphaus:

Dear Faculty,

The principle of shared governance in American higher education is one of our most honored traditions. This practice provides our institutions with both the continuity and change needed to enhance our academic excellence. In that spirit, I am launching an internal search for the position of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to build on the work of Professor Brigid Flannery. I am keenly aware that the Associate Dean role is among the most challenging in the academy. As you know, Brigid has numerous accomplishments to cite and treasure.

Our COE Internal Governance describes the role of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and provides the following procedures for (a) identifying candidates and (b) selecting a department head:

“The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (ADAA) is responsible for overseeing and guiding the academic mission and providing oversight of academic processes and policies in the COE, including curriculum, and faculty/student grievances. In addition, the ADAA provides leadership to and supports the integration of the academic and research enterprises within the academic programs.”

“The Associate Deans shall be selected by the Dean from COE career faculty members at the rank of Associate Professor or higher… The Dean shall solicit and consider nominations from representative faculty. Preference for [both of] these positions shall be given to candidates with the rank of full Professor, Senior Research Associate II, or Full Research Professor and relevant University level experience. The Dean shall consult with constituent faculty (i.e., department heads, unit directors, Program Directors) in the final decision making process.”

To begin this process, please forward any candidate nominations to me prior to 5 pm on January 27. This schedule should allow me to make an appointment prior to Spring break.

 Gratefully, and with best wishes,

Randy
