Course and Program Review for Fall 2015
Course Review. Fifteen courses were reviewed by the COE Curriculum Committee. One course was deactivated (CDS Audiological Rehabilitation). One course was sent back for revisions and all others were approved by faculty. These were moved forward to UOCC. Just a reminder you can track the status of any course by looking it up in CourseLeaf (https://nextcatalog.uoregon.edu/courseadmin/ ).
About 50% of the courses needed to have some adjustments to them before going forward to the COE Curriculum Committee. A large number of these were because faculty are not using the most current syllabi template. We had syllabi that clearly had not been updated as they included contacts such as David Chard and Joe Stevens, much less statements and links that were out of date. Please look at all your syllabi and be sure to update each year. The link for syllabi information is available at bottom of https://coe.uoregon.edu/governance/curriculum-review-policies. This has tips about what is expected as well as the required statements.
We used CourseLeaf for the first time at UO in the Fall (https://nextcatalog.uoregon.edu/courseadmin/ ). There have been a few glitches in process but overall went smoothly. The Curriculum Committee will look at the process to see if any changes need to be made internally due to this management system. I am continuing to meet with Ron Bramhall and Kathy Warden to better manage our system and to address faculty concerns regarding the visibility of comments and voting. I will keep you posted as I learn more.
Program review. Four programs were reviewed by the COE Curriculum Committee: Family and Human Services Minor, Quantitative Research Methods Graduate Specialization, Educational Foundations: Secondary Undergraduate Certificate, Foundations in Special Education Undergraduate Certificate. All were approved by the faculty and have moved forward to Academic Affairs and the Graduate School (where appropriate).
Higher Education Administration Graduate Specialization which was approved last year by faculty. It had an initial review by Academic Affairs and questions sent to the department for response.

Foundations of educational research course workgroup has begun its work (Robert Horner, Kent McIntosh, Jerry Rosiek, Lisa Mazzei Elizabeth Skowron, Atika Khurana, Michael Bullis, Gina Biancarosa (Chair)).
Charge for workgroup:
1) to design a foundational research course that will be required of all COE PhD students. As a group will define (a) clear student learning objectives, (b) some course parameters that ensure quality delivery (such as describing instructor qualifications, course format, timing, etc.), and (c) potentially some critical core assignments and readings. Then a subcommittee would draft the syllabus based on our consensus.
2) define core research competencies that we think any PhD graduating from a leading research College of Education should have as a preliminary exercise to defining learning objectives for this new course (from Dean Kamphaus)
I will update you as I have more information.
New programs for review in Spring. The first step in developing a new program is approval of a synopsis by the Department Head Council and Dean (meet about 2x per month). Things to consider for the synopsis are:
1. General information about a) rationale information about the rationale (why needed, how will enhance or complement the COE programs/mission), b) the key features of the design (e.g., format (online/in person), built off existing program or brand new), c) targeted audience (UG/G), d) anticipated start
2. Program description - number of credits, new/existing/shared courses, open to others or limited to certain degrees, expected enrollment
3. Financial or other resources that might be needed to support the program- what will the extra investments be for long term and short term.
4. List of programs that might be impacted positively or negatively (COE/UO) and if you have talked with any of them.
February 26 1:00-2:00 in 260 U Information (Q &A) for faculty submitting new courses or programs
Curriculum policy. The COE Curriculum Committee will begin the review of the current COE policy and procedures. The first meeting is January 13. Once they have completed their proposed revisions it will be posted for comment and later for vote. I hope this work will be finished before June 2016.
Thanks for all the work of faculty to improve our programs and courses. If you have curriculum questions check in with your Program Director, Department Head, COE Curriculum Committee representative attend the Q & A session(February 26) or if necessary schedule a time to meet with me.
