The Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies oversees undergraduate education at the University of Oregon. Primary responsibility is to lead the university community in providing exceptional undergraduate education within the environment of a major research institution. The Vice Provost coordinates a range of programs and services, working with the Office of Academic Affairs and academic units across the campus to ensure coherent curricula and policies, stimulate academic engagement and research opportunities, and cultivate a culture of intellectual curiosity for UO undergraduates.
The Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies reports to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and is a member of the Vice Provosts' Council. The Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies has management and budget authority over all component programs in the Division of Undergraduate Studies: Academic Advising, Accessible Education Center, First-Year Programs, and the Teaching and Learning Center. The Vice Provost is expected to marshal the units around a common vision to enhance the academic success of undergraduate students.

The Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies works closely with the Undergraduate Council to review curricular proposals, develop policies, and set short and long-term goals for undergraduate education. The Vice Provost works with academic units to implement new programs and revisions to undergraduate education. The Vice Provost also works with and facilitates communication among the UO President, Provost and vice presidents; academic deans and associate deans; faculty and administrative committees; student groups; Associated Students of the University of Oregon; and other constituencies dedicated to the success and excellence of undergraduate education at the University.

Major Duties:

  * Participate in and provide leadership for University and OUS initiatives in areas such as general education design and outcomes; curriculum and program development; grade culture; excellence in undergraduate teaching; distance and online education; articulation and transfer arrangements; and student retention and academic success.
  * Work with the Office of Academic Affairs and the Dean and Associate Deans of the Graduate School to review academic departments and programs.
  * Formulate and implement a strategy of short- and long-term goals for faculty and student engagement in all stages of the undergraduate experience.
  * Coordinate with the College of Arts and Sciences, the largest provider of undergraduate instruction, on initiatives related to undergraduate education.
  * Help build and oversee targeted programs for undergraduates in the lower division, including Freshman Interest Groups, Freshman Seminars, and programs for students on probation.
  * Collaborate with other units on and help oversee such upper-division initiatives as distinguished scholarship opportunities and undergraduate research.
  * Work with the Division of Student Affairs to oversee such academic initiatives as the Global Scholars Hall, Residential Freshman Interest Groups, SuperNova, and Community Conversations.
  * Work closely with the Vice President for Development to cultivate fund-raising strategies that directly support undergraduate teaching and education.
  * Work with the Division of Enrollment Management and Office of Equity and Inclusion to develop programs for outreach to and recruitment of underrepresented students. Support the University's commitment to creating a more inclusive and diverse undergraduate experience.
  * Collaborate with the Office of International Affairs and other units to support the academic success of international undergraduate students.
  * Convene and work closely with the Undergraduate Council to establish criteria for excellent general education courses and to ensure coherence, quality, and rigor across the curriculum.
  * Work with the Office of the Dean of Students to combat academic dishonesty and with other units campuswide to promote a culture prizing academic integrity.
  * Oversee continued development of outstanding academic services for undergraduate students, including Academic Advising, Accessible Education Center, Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence, First-Year Programs, PE and Recreation, and the Teaching and Learning Center (including the Teaching Effectiveness Program, PathwayOregon, MacNair Scholars, TRiO, and Student Support Services), and liaise effectively with other divisions such as Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.
  * Work with and facilitate communication among affiliated programs that foster academic excellence such as the Robert D. Clark Honors College<http://honors.uoregon.edu/>, College Scholars Program, Faculty Perspective Seminars, Faculty Firesides, Community Conversations, Phi Beta Kappa, and Distinguished Scholarships.
