Subject:        A "Distinguished Scholarships" Reception for Outstanding Sophomores and Juniors
The University continues its commitment to strengthen institutional support for outstanding undergraduate students who may be competitive for such distinguished national scholarships as the Rhodes, the Marshall, the Truman, the Churchill, the Mitchell, the Gates/Cambridge, the Fulbright, the Boren, and so forth.  During the last three years, 106 nationally competitive scholarships have been awarded to our students--honors that could not have occurred without referrals from our faculty.
I am writing again this year to ask your help in developing a list of students the President will invite to a reception and information session this spring. The gathering will be for this year's juniors who might compete for scholarships like the Rhodes, the Marshall, the Mitchell next fall and for outstanding sophomores who might consider the Goldwater, the Udall or the Hollings or begin taking steps that would lead to competitive future applications.  President Gottfredson will be extending them a personal invitation to the reception.
I hope you will share this request with colleagues, including of course faculty advisors, who might also be in positions to suggest students.  Thank you for your help.
Please send the names (including student numbers and e-mail addresses if possible) of sophomores and juniors who you believe should be encouraged to apply for a distinguished scholarship, to pkegel at uoregon.edu<mailto:pkegel at uoregon.edu>, by Friday, March 15th. The reception this year for students will be held on Thursday, April 25th.
