The Optimizing Swallowing and Eating for the Elderly Lab (O-SEE) at the University of Oregon (United States), in collaboration with the Aging Swallow Research Lab at McMaster University (Canada), is excited to announce a newly-funded Family Caregiver Study, which may be relevant for your patients with dementia and their family members.

Funded by the National Institutes of Health (R21AG082326), this study explores the impact of dysphagia on caregiver burden by asking individuals living with and caring for a family member with dementia to complete a 30-minute online survey. Compensation will be provided. The ultimate goal of this project is to develop an intervention that reduces dysphagia-related caregiver burden and improves caregiver and care recipient health and quality of life.

We’re inviting fellow speech-language pathologists to share the attached study flyers with your patients with dementia and/or their family (or chosen family) caregivers who may be eligible. While family caregivers may not directly benefit from taking the survey, they would be contributing to research aimed at reducing difficulties associated with caregiving.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions. We thank you for your assistance in spreading the word!

The University of Oregon is located within the traditional homelands of the Southern Kalapuya. Following the Willamette Valley Treaty of 1855, Kalapuya people were forcibly removed to the Coast Reservation in Western Oregon. Today, descendants are citizens of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon.
