My name is CDR Michael Rinaldi, I am a therapist officer in the US Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps.

There are multiple excellent job opportunities within the Commissioned Corps for speech-language pathologists. The USPHS Commissioned Corps is the world's foremost public health service. As a non-armed uniformed service, it is composed entirely of officers from various health-related disciplines who are stationed throughout the U.S. and abroad at federal government agencies. In addition, officers receive opportunities for unique voluntary deployments, which have included responses to national disasters and international humanitarian needs such as Ebola treatment and containment, Haiti earthquake, Boston Marathon bombing, Hurricane Katrina, 9/11 World Trade Center attacks, anthrax bioterrorist attacks and more recently the COVID-19 pandemic.

Therapist Officer Disciplines: Physical therapist; occupational therapist; respiratory therapist; speech pathologist; audiologist

Duties: Perform traditional clinical services; Conduct research; Develop national health policies; Coordinate education efforts on adopting healthy lifestyles to prevent disability and disease; Respond to healthcare emergencies.


Benefits: Commissioned Corps benefits are generous. They include:

*                     NHSC Loan Repayment Program of $20,000/year

*                     Senior Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern Program (SRCOSTEP) for students entering their final year of graduate school.  Students receive the basic pay and allowances of an Ensign (approximately $63k for a two-year commitment following graduation)

*                     Board certification pay of $6000/year

*                     Health care and dental care at no cost to the active duty officer (premium for family dental coverage)

*                     30 days of paid vacation per year

*                     Paid relocation

*                     Assignments in various government agencies including: Indian Health Service (IHS), Bureau of Prisons (BOP), National Institutes of Health (NIH)

*                     Pension after 20 years of service
