Dear colleagues,

One of the most gratifying aspects of being dean is learning about the incredible research, scholarship, and creative work that happens in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). The work that our faculty and students do creating new knowledge and understanding and applying it to real-world problems is core to our academic mission and contributes to making the world a better place.

We are fortunate that much of our research is supported by external granting agencies and foundations. Continuing an annual tradition, we are pleased to share a compilation of externally funded research grants secured by CAS faculty over the past year (AY 2021-22) and the projects they support. Entitled “From Curiosity to Impact: 2021-22 Sponsored Research in the College of Arts and Sciences (https://uoregon.us21.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8268a9740a12017b6fb62e6b3&id=710dc13a3e&e=2a15987c70) ,” the online report features sponsored research from across all three divisions of CAS, and it spotlights work ranging from critical environmental conservation to social issues involving adolescents and adults, Native American language revitalization, and the transformation of publishing archives across the field of literature.

In 2021-22, the College brought in over $75 million in grant dollars, with funding coming from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Oregon Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Energy, and a host of other agencies and foundations. The breadth of research and faculty involvement across the university, the state, the nation, and the globe is impressive.

In our CAS report you will find information on faculty who have been awarded grants as well as summaries of all external awards received. The report also features 10 stories highlighting selected projects that dive into the intersection of sleep, stress and alcohol; describe the best ways to manage our forests for longevity; and look at microscopic members of oceanic food webs.

Thanks for taking the time to learn more about CAS and our influential work. We encourage you to share our research report with your networks.

Best regards,
Chris Poulsen
