We are currently recruiting students for the Summer 2013 Trans-Pacific Leadership program at Portland State University (PSU), a special partnership course between PSU, Waseda University (Tokyo), and the Shibusawa Foundation. This multidisciplinary course will be of special interest to studies whose studies focus on Japan, civic leadership/community engagement, global partnership building, and connections between the United States, Japan, and other nearby East Asian nations.

Trans-Pacific Leadership is a new course offering made possible through a partnership between Portland State University and Waseda University (Tokyo, Japan). Trans-Pacific Leadership provides PSU students with the opportunity to study alongside Waseda students at PSU to collaboratively explore aspects of leadership that are necessary to develop and support the concept of “civil society.” The course is based on the thinking and life of Eiichi Shibusawa, a major force behind Japan’s early modernization, who emphasized the importance of ethical conduct in business, and civil society’s place in good governance. We will explore three areas: community-supported agriculture, women's leadership roles, and disaster recovery efforts (added in response to the 2011 Tohoku tsunami). Field organizations and guest speakers for the Summer 2013 Trans-Pacific Leadership program include Mercy Corps, the World Affairs Council of Oregon, Winter Green Farm, First Stop Portland, the Nikkei Legacy Center, Portland Farmers Market, and Zenger Farm.

Students wishing to enroll in the Trans-Pacific Leadership course should complete the PSU "quick enrollment" process, located at http://www.pdx.edu/admissions/other-applicant (under "non-degree application).Registration is open now, and limited slots are available! The course is listed as Political Science 410/510: Trans-Pacific Leadership in the PSU online course catalog (4 credits). Trans-Pacific Leadership meets twice weekly (Tuesdays and Thursdays) from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. between July 16 and August 1, and daily from August 5 through August 9 (class session from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., field work from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.). Additionally, students are invited to attend a catered opening reception with our Waseda colleagues on the evening of Saturday, August 4, a catered closing reception on the evening of Friday, August 9, and an all-day field trip on Saturday, August 10 (tour of the Portland Farmers Market, tour of the Winter Green Farm and U-DIG CSA sites in Deadwood, OR, and dinner at the Oregon coast in Florence, OR). Event costs are fully covered for all students.
