Dear UO students:
The UO is launching this summer two exciting new study abroad programs intended to allow for firsthand exploration of representative EcoDistricts and eco-cities that have been developed in China and across Europe, respectively. These new programs are designed to leverage the UO's strength in sustainability studies for a global discussion about what urban development must look like in a sustainable world.
In both European countries and China, there is great diversity across existing examples of green urban development. There are both EcoDistricts (more common in Europe but present in China, too) within cities, and eco-cities (entire green cities) in both regions of the world. There are also both grassroots/organic examples developed by local residents and government-planned examples in both China and Europe. Either of our new programs will allow you to learn about a range of possible solutions and approaches for sustainable urban development, and to compare them to each other and to what we are doing here at home.
The programs are designed to accommodate students in many areas of study and with many different academic and personal strengths. The credits will be awarded in PPPM (planning, public policy and management) but may be applicable toward majors or minors in other departments as well (ask your adviser). Either programs offers both graduate (600) and undergraduate (400) enrollment levels.
On Wednesday, we are holding a lunchtime information session (with pizza) to preview these new summer program offerings:
