Buyers: Potential Shipping Delays

Dear Campus Buyers,
On August 1, it is possible that workers at United Parcel Services(UPS) will go on strike.  If there is a strike, the freight normally moved by UPS will be taken up by other carriers.  However, we expect this will cause a slowdown in deliveries across all carriers. Purchasing and Contracting Services recommends that UO departments plan for the possibility that any deliveries could be delayed should this strike move forward.

While few of our Duck Depot vendors use UPS as their primary shipping partner, it is likely that demand for shipping will exceed capacity among the other carriers for the duration of the strike, and the university could feel the impact. Vendors who have historically used UPS have provided some assurances that they are working to make alternative plans, but the other carriers will likely prioritize existing customers, which makes it possible that delays among these vendors may be more severe. US Bank uses UPS as their primary carrier, so delivery of new PCards may also be delayed. Additionally, vendors that do not use UPS as a primary carrier often receive goods from their suppliers via UPS, which could also cause delays.

Please share this information broadly across your division, school, or college, so employees are aware of the situation and have the opportunity to prepare and account for delivery delays as much as possible.
