Dear Biology Instructors:
Here is current view from CAS on the requests to make finals optional; Hal Sadofsky suggests some options; individual instructors can decide how they want to handle this. And it sounds like there will be more guidance later today on this, so you might want to wait until then to make any definite decisions/plans as to how to handle these requests.

Dear Colleagues,
There will be guidance coming from Academic Council today on the requests to make finals optional. Here is my summary on what is coming (though understand that I haven’t seen a final version):
(1) Be empathetic, whatever you decide to do, and please listen and don’t dismiss student concerns even if you aren’t going to do what they ask.
I’m re-including this TEP link: https://blogs.uoregon.edu/keepteaching/2020/06/02/closing-class-amid-national-rage-sorrow/
(2) Instructors may decide to make the final optional if they think it is appropriate - they don’t have to. They could instead do some other things like
- allow the final to be taken later (give an “I”)
- allow the final to be optional for students who register P/NP.
Or they could stick to their syllabus, though I'll underline again to listen and be empathetic.
-Hal
