Dear friends,

I write to see if you’d consider signing a petition to the board of directors of the Hispanic Society of America in light of last week’s invited visit of Ms. Díaz Ayuso, the far-right president of the community of Madrid to its home in NYC. As you may know, the Hispanic Society has a fantastic collection of manuscripts, incunables, paintings, photography, and art and historical documents spanning medieval Spain to Colonial Latin America, indigenous codices and contemporary epistolary collections, among many, many treasures most of us have had the privilege to work with with the help of its wonderful staff. Moreover, the HSA is in the middle of Washington Heights, a historically Hispanic neighborhood with a vibrant Caribbean community, next door to the Boricua College and Library. Ms. Ayuso was invited to the HSA and among the many remarks she made before, during, and after this visit are her denunciation of indigenous studies, her claims that Christianity and Spain "brought civilization" to the Americas, and her characterization of race and indigenous studies as “a communist" lens to study the histories and legacies of Hispanism. The HSA has remained silent about this invitation, visit, and remarks.

If you can share the link with your networks, we’d appreciate it.
