Subject: [MUSICOLOGY-ALL] Medieval music seminars at the Mill Pub, Cambridge - start Tuesday 17 January - 6.00-7.00pm

Dear Colleagues,

You are invited to a seminar in the back bar of the Mill Pub, Mill Lane,
Cambridge on Tuesday 17 January, 6.00-7.00pm.

[If you are unable to attend but would like to correspond on these matters,
feel free to drop me a line.]

For the past 10 years I have been exploring the idea that the
quintessentially European poetic form of the sonnet might have a genetic
relationship with the poetic / dance-song traditions of the Arabs and Jews
of al-Andalus (namely muwashshah and zajal).

My explorations have taken me far and wide. The elements include poetry,
song, dance, musicality, poetic duelling, border regimes, musical
instruments, Arabic and Jewish philosophy... I am particularly interested in
the capacity of song, music and dance to subvert established borders. Recent
researches have taken me to the "jungle" refugee camps of Calais,  Dunkerque
and Kurdistan. It has been a fascinating journey - and it is a journey that
is continuing.

Every Tuesday evening during term time I shall present an hour-long seminar
in the pub's back bar, on various aspect of my researches. Below I list some
of the topics that will be covered. My interest is to build a community of
scholarship around these questions.

Admission is free. You are invited to join us. Only one thing I would ask -
if you wish to attend a given seminar, please write immediately and reserve
your place, because we only have a few places available.

To reserve a place, please write to:

The first session will be on Tuesday 17 January. I shall present a brief
outline of the research project, and shall then present a paper on
"Arabising influences at the Sicilian court of Federico II".

By kind permission of the Mill management, the academic session will be
followed by a musical session in the bar. You can expect fiddles and flutes,
jigs and reels, and a song or two.

With a touch of humour, the title for the series is "Ed Emery's Musical
Academy @ The Mill".

Critical theory, beer, good food, and the best pub in Cambridge.

What better way to start the New Year...!

With best regards,

Ed Emery

____________
