Dear Colleagues in Andalusi Studies and Arab Music Studies,
I am writing to let you know of an event taking place at the
University of California, Santa Barbara, Feb. 20-22, that will explore
the interrelations between Muslim and Jewish traditions of
"Andalusian" music from the Middle Ages to the present through a
combination of concert, symposium, and workshop.
At the academic workshop (not mentioned in the PR below), which will
take place during the day on Friday, Feb. 20 and on Saturday, Feb.
21, papers are being circulated beforehand for discussion.
The presenters at the workshop will include Edwin Seroussi, Carl
Davila, Jonathan Shannon, Jonathan Glasser, Christopher Witulski,
Philip Murphy, Brian Karl, and myself.
The concert will include examples from Moroccan Ala, Tlemcenian Nuba
and Inqilab repertories, Hebrew Piyyutim, Moroccan Melhun, and end
with a full Syrian Wasla of Sama'i, Muwashshahat and Qudud in Maqam
Saba. Scott Marcus will be conducted a group made up of members of
the UCSB Middle East Ensemble with guest appearances by Jonathan
Glasser, Christopher Witulski, and Jonathan Shannon. Our featured
guest artist will be Esti Kenan Ofri.
If anyone would like to attend any portion of this event, please
contact me ASAP. The concert venue is small (only 150 seats) and
reserved seating will probably go quickly (ticket reservations began
today), but I have held back a few tickets for special guests.
Best regards,
Dwight Reynolds
