21ST ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM of the SOCIEDAD ESPAÑOLA DE ESTUDIOS ÁRABES (SEEA) IN CORDOBA

2nd - 5th of October 2014, in the Biblioteca Viva de al-Andalus (Palacio del Bailío, Córdoba, Spain).

THURSDAY 2ND OCTOBER

17.00   Doors open with tea, coffee and refreshments.

17.30   Presentation and projection of the newly released documentary Al-Mariya, Puerta del Levante, on the occasion of the city of Almería's millennium 1014-2014.

18.15   Presentation of Awraq 9 "Islam Today" by the Director General of Casa Árabe D. Eduardo López Busquets. Then of the latest publications on Arabic topics by Ediciones del Oriente y del Mediterráneo and Fundación Ibn Tufayl, and of a small exhibition of "Classic Books on Arabism and Andalusi Cordoba".

18.55   Break.

19.15   Projection of the recent Arabic film with Spanish subtitles: Where do we go now?, by Nadine Labaki.

FRIDAY 3RD OCTOBER

09.15   Inauguration of the Symposium by the Director General of Casa Árabe D. Eduardo López Busquets, a representative of the Mayor of Córdoba and Dª. Margarita Ruiz Schrader, Vicepresident of the Fundación Paradigma Córdoba.

09.45   Award of the 1st "Cálamo de Honor" prize to the publishers Ediciones de Oriente y del Mediterráneo, for "granting a direct voice to the Arab world through its literature"; acceptance speech by directors Inmaculada Jiménez Morell (Director) y Fernando García Burillo (Univ. Autonoma of Madrid).

10.10   SESSION ON CORDOBA. Presided by Jorge Lirola.

            Pedro Marfil (Univ. of Córdoba) “Arab monuments in Cordoba; recent discoveries.

            Clara María Thomas de Antonio (Univ. of Sevilla) "Cordoba in the neo-Arabic literature".

11.15   Break.

11.40   The Iraqi authoress Bahira Abdulatif (Univ. of Bagdad and Univ. Autonoma of Madrid), translator into Arabic of the works of Rafael Alberti and J. L. Borges and committed to women's rights in the Arab and Islamic world: "Femenism and Arabic feminine literature". Presided by Fernando García Burillo.

13.30   Short walk through the old city centre (the Medina) followed by optional lunch at the La Montillana tavern.

16.30   SEEA PRIZE FOR YOUNG RESEARCHERS, with the patronage of Casa Árabe and presided by Javier Rosón. This year's finalists:

Desirée López Bernal (Univ. of Granada) “From Orient to Al-Andalus: medieval Arab writers and humour”.

Elia Romo Terol (Univ. of Barcelona) “From the Blog to the Book: Egyptian 2.0 Literature and New Debates”.

Patricia Olcina Ponsell (Univ. of Granada) “The Murabitun Movement in Granada”.

The finalists present their research and answer the questions of the audience, who will be asked to express their preference. The name of the winner will be announced during the Members Gala on Saturday night.

18.40   ANDALUSI HISTORY AND CULTURE, presided by Miquel Forcada.

Pedro Cano Ávila (Univ. of Sevilla) "Andalusi and Arabic coins from the Seville Archaeological Museum".

Emilio González Ferrín (Univ. of Sevilla) "Oriental wisdom in Ibn Tufayl and European personalism".

Jorge Lirola Delgado (Univ. of Almería) "Cordoba and the Andalusi intellectual legacy. Its presence in the Biblioteca de al-Andalus".

21.30   Optional tapas dinner at the Caravansar Arabic food restaurant, close to the Mosque-Cathedral.

23.00   Guided visit to the Alcázar and its Gardens with water, light and sound show.

SATURDAY 4TH OCTOBER

09.15   SESSION IN ARABIC, presided by Bahira Abdulatif, with questions and debate in Arabic (Spanish summaries will be made available).

Hanaa Mohamed-Hammadi Mejdoubi (Ceuta) "Conflict of Ideological-Linguistic Systems in the Contemporary Arab World".

Miquel Forcada (Univ. of Barcelona) "Science Behind the Curtain During the Cordoba Caliphate".

11.00   Break.

11.30   ANDALUSI PLACE-NAMES, presided by Robert Pocklington.

Juan Antonio Chavarría Vargas (Univ. Complutense Madrid) “The Andalusi Arabisation of Hispanic Pre-Roman Place-names and the Result in Romance. From Opacity to the Optimum Sequence”.

Virgilio Martínez Enamorado (Univ. of Malaga) "Andalusi Place-Names: the forging of a rich heritage".

13.30   Visit to the Roman Bridge, Guadalquivir River and the Calahorra Tower.

14.30   Optional lunch in the well-known Casa Pepe de la Judería tavern.

17.00   General Assembly of the SEEA.

21.30   Gala dinner for members, and award of the SEEA Prize for Young Researchers by the Director General of Casa Árabe D. Eduardo López Busquets. At the Palacete Andaluz Taberna Los Berengueles.

SUNDAY 5TH OCTOBER

10.00   Guided visit to the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, by Pedro Marfil, author of the book Las puertas de la Mezquita de Córdoba durante el emirato Omeya, and formerly the archaeologist responsible for its preservation over a period of 18 years.
